Most UK small business websites convert at 1-3% (visitor-to-enquiry). The 5-10% sites aren't using secret tricks — they're getting seven specific elements right. Here they are.
1. A specific, scannable value proposition above the fold
The visitor should know in three seconds: what you do, who it's for, what makes you different. Generic "professional services" copy fails this test. "Cardiff-based web design for UK accountancy firms — websites and client portals from £799" passes it.
2. Trust signals visible before scrolling
Logos of named clients (with permission), real review snippets, trade body credentials, named team members with photos. Not lorem-ipsum stock photos. The visitor decides whether to trust you in the first ten seconds; give them reasons.
3. Service / product clarity
Each thing you offer should have a dedicated page (not a 100-word stub) that covers: what it is, who it's for, what's included, what it costs (or starting from), how long it takes, and how to start. Generic "Our Services" carousels with one sentence per service convert at a fraction of dedicated pages.
4. Pricing transparency
The data is overwhelming: businesses that publish prices (or starting-from numbers) convert 30-50% more than those that hide them. The argument that "every project is different" reads as evasive to most prospects under 50. Be honest about ranges and let prospects self-select. Look at our pricing page for an example.
5. A clear primary CTA
One main action you want every visitor to take, repeated consistently across pages. Not seven competing CTAs. For most service businesses that's "Book a free 10-minute call" or "Get a free audit". Whatever you pick, repeat it.
6. Sector-specific landing pages
If you serve multiple sectors, build dedicated pages for each. Our accountants page converts at different rates from our tradespeople page because the language, trust signals and proof points differ. Generic homepages can't do this work.
7. Mobile performance
If your site loads in over 3 seconds on mobile or shifts visibly during load, you lose 40%+ of visitors before they see anything. Lighthouse Performance score 80+ on mobile is the floor for a serious 2026 site.
What you can stop worrying about
- Hero animations
- Custom cursors
- Parallax scrolling
- "Award-winning" badges from agencies nobody's heard of
- Newsletter signups before any value is delivered
These don't move conversion materially. The seven above do.
Where most sites fail
In rough order: trust signals missing, pricing hidden, services too vague, CTA not clear or repeated. Fix those four and most sites double conversion within a quarter.
